An Invitation: A Tribute to Surendra Ratnam

A Final Farewell to a Dear Friend and Kindred Spirit
By A K M Mohsin
We expected him to visit Singapore again in June this year. He had plans to establish a spiritual bar in this consumerist society, but his destiny decreed otherwise. He eschewed evil activities and dedicated himself to work on righteousness and in this quest discovered ‘The Life Cycle.’ (Jiva Chakra). His spiritual ability ignited in him with greater power to contemplate these paranormal issues. His quest for individual liberty leaves us bereft with his passing.

A pious and naive man, who denied worldly affairs in a desperate search for mystical ecstasy of the soul, he left the noisy confusion of Singapore burdened by depression. The self-effacing saint took shelter on the lap of nature. He sacrificed himself in a lonely forest near Pokhara in Nepal. Nature has provided him with his final resting place. A lifelong bachelor with the resolve to committing suicide, he left us forever in that lonely wood.

We refer to our dearest friend and colleague Surendra Ratnam Suren. He was a well-wisher, advisor, and a true friend of Banglar Kantha. Although his father was a famous person, Suren led a life of simplicity and modesty. He comes from a Hindu family but wasn’t strongly attached to the traditional rituals of Hinduism. He dedicated himself to the field of humanity and held a reverence for every religion. He became an iconic figure for preaching religious tolerance and understanding.
He devoted much time on Sufism, Muslim meditation theory. Suren loved human beings above all religions, and always considered that humanism rises above all organized religion.
His father Shanmuga Ratnam and mother Jill Ratnam nurtured and taught him the highest aspects of humanity. Under their supervision, our dearest Suren prepared himself with great passion in spirituality.

After finishing his school life at Cranleigh Boarding School in England, Suren completed the final years at the United World College of South East Asia, Singapore. As a meritorious student he completed his BSC in the field of Physiotherapy at Cartin University of Technology in Australia. In his personal life, he was a devoted follower of Sai Baba in India.

Suren was a very blessed soul, so deeply influenced by the thoughts and teachings of Sai Baba that he gave up all luxuries and ostentation. He had no attachment to perishable items, as his sole concern was to reach self-realization. Several times he embarked on business ventures, but due to his naivety, he was cheated each time.

He glowed with the light of humanity, and in doing so, he overcame the fraudulence, cheating and torturing natures of others. He always tried to spread the essence and fragrance of spiritual thought for mankind.

Suren comes from a prominent family. His father professor Shanmuga Ratnam is the initiator of test-tube reproduction in Asia and the writer of the famous book ‘Cries from Within’ describing the procedure for sex change operations. His mother Jill Ratnam is now a volunteer social worker with the foreign worker organization TWC2. She loves the workers and helps those in need. She inspired Suren to love humanity and work for them.

As an adult, Suren felt he had attained spiritual powers and continued to work to improve this ability. The following online links reveal some of his works.

He traveled with this spiritual power till last moment of his life. Preparing to end his life, he paid the amount due at his of hotel in Pokhara, Nepal, put padlock on the door, and embraced the visual world. He passed away from the material world to call upon his creator.

Suren will never return to work on the Banglar Kantha blog. He will no longer keep late hours, discussing religious and mystical topics, losing himself in thought. He will not have the chance to delve in the deeper side of his writings. But Suren will live through his works. Suren’s creative works remain for all time to instruct and inspire us.

The loss of his passing away from the world cannot be filled to Banglar Kantha and Dibashram. We will not cry for him because he remains in our soul as well as our constant inspiration. We pray for the salvation of his departed soul. We express our heartfelt condolences to his mother, sister and his bereaved family, so that they may overcome that grief. The Banglar Kantha family conveyed our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our beloved Suren.

He was born on 14 September 1970 and breathed his last on 18 May 2012 in Pokhara, Nepal. Sai Ram, a spiritual follower’s team of Sai Baba in Nepal completed the funeral rites for Suren’s cremation. He was laid to eternal rest on the bank of Seti Gandaki River near Pokhara.

After receiving the sad news, the publication authorities of Banglar Kantha have decided at an urgent condolence meeting to dedicate the current issue to the contributions of Suren.
